The refurbished Vocational Training Centre (VTC) building and new services for the Western Care Association on John Moore Road in Castlebar were officially opened recently following the work by Simon Beale + Associates.
This is the Western Care Association Head Office located at John Moore Road, Knockaphunta, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
This venue provides community-based day services, training, education, and social enterprises for adults and children with neurodiverse needs and intellectual disabilities.
Major refurbishment plans for the aging VTC building were initially approved in late 2020 before undergoing structural upgrades.
Western Care had campaigned for public voting through the AIB Community Fund to develop an advanced sensory room inside this specific VTC building.
The proposed refurbishment of the Western Care Vocational Training Centre at John Moore Road, Castlebar presents a contemporary and welcoming upgrade to the existing facility, with particular emphasis on accessibility, functionality and an improved environment for service users, staff and visitors.
The design retains a predominantly single-storey, domestic-scale character, using simple pitched-roof forms and light-coloured rendered walls. These are complemented by dark roof finishes, window frames, and a raised central element, giving the refurbished building a clear contemporary identity while maintaining a restrained appearance appropriate to its setting.
The main entrance is clearly defined at the centre of the composition through extensive glazing and contrasting dark cladding. Red and green accent panels introduce colour and reinforce the identity of Western Care, while the organisation's signage and logo are prominently incorporated into the front elevation. The glazed entrance also increases natural light and creates a more open and welcoming arrival experience.
The external works provide a safe and accessible approach to the building, with clearly defined pedestrian crossing points, level paved access, accessible parking and bollards separating pedestrian and vehicle movements. Parking is arranged immediately adjacent to the building for convenient access, including for people with reduced mobility.
Landscaped planting around the entrance and parking areas softens the built form and creates a more attractive setting. Trees, shrubs, ornamental planting, and grassed areas provide a pleasant transition between the building and surrounding grounds, while the inclusion of people and activity illustrates the centre as an active, inclusive community facility.
Overall, the refurbishment seeks to modernise the existing vocational training centre while creating a brighter, more accessible, and welcoming environment. The combination of improved entrances, contemporary materials, enhanced glazing, accessible external spaces and landscaping gives Western Care a stronger public presence on John Moore Road while retaining a human scale appropriate to the centre's vocational and community-based use.
